“The Next Song” of 2013

01

“The Next Song” of 2013
Homegrown artists Jiu Jian and Liang Wern Fook inject vitality into timeless Xinyao

Local talent, Jiu Jian, first met producer/songwriter Liang Wern Fook at the Xinyao Festival 23 years ago.  The duo hit it off and has worked together closely ever since.  Lending his crisp vocals to many of Liang’s evergreen classics, Jiu has performed many timeless pieces, such as《亲亲你念着谁》、《羞答答的玫瑰静悄悄地开》、《天知道地知道你知道》、《请你告诉她》and many more.

“The Next Song” is Liang’s latest piece of work, specially written and tailored with Jiu in mind.  This brand new single comes 17 years after the 1996 debut of Singapore’s first Mandarin musical “December Rains”, in which Jiu first performed Liang’s original composition, 《请你告诉她》Please tell him  .

This new single exudes some melodious aura of continental magic, a first of its kind in the history of the duo’s partnerships.  A light, hearty ballad that is contrastingly well-complemented by Jiu’s powerful vocals brings Xinyao to a next level.  With “The Next Song”, experience the tunes of earnest friendship, the spirit of never giving up in face of hardship and the appreciation for love and life.

Jiu Jian:                            “Amongst our many collaborations, “The Next Song” must be the one piece of work that has taken the longest time before we decide to perpare for production, right from conceptualisation to the current stage.  The single will be released next Jan , together with my autobiography, which will feature my photography and literary work.  I hope to inspire, through my music and lens, sharing my passion and hopes of life.”

Liang Wern Fook:        “It was a holiday trip out on the Mediterranean Sea that “The Next Song” was conceived, so that probably explains its continental ballad of style.  A bit of inspiration was drawn from amid the hustles of life, where there are just so many things we take for granted.  I’d like to encourage everyone to treasure the many facets of life; little precious moments, music, friendship and the people around us.  Just like how a singer/songwriter awaits the ‘birth’ of his next song, we should cherish our current song and believe in tomorrow’s making of a better, next song.”

“The Next song” will involve  a group of local, distinguished team of musical talents:

Daniel Chai                     Music Producer, Arranger, Guitar, Mandolin
Elain Chan                      Background Vocals and Production
Brandon Wong                Bass Cello
Saywal Kassim                Accordion
Rizal Saniip                     Drums
Desmond You                  Production Sound Mixer, Audio Mastering
Liang Wern Fook              Cameo for overall production and supporting vocals

A chat with Sulian Tan Wijaya

sulian-tan-main

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I actually grew up in a neighbourhood of alpha males, mostly around my age, whom all got straight As and did competitive sports. We also used to cycle, play sports and compete in
virtually everything.

Representing my school and junior college in swimming and squash made me very competitive and thankfully I also managed to do well enough to get into NUS Law School.

I see you’ve modelled in the past, had experience as a TV host and even dabbled a little in DJ-ing – which would you say was the most fulfilling?

I had fun doing them all, and in addition I also play keyboards in a band. We even won a nationwide band competition once.

Modelling at Carrie Models paid very well but as a tomboy, it took me 2 years to grow my hair long and learn to wear heels.

I took DJ-ing seriously, and was spinning in a top club every Wed and Sat nights. Because I love music so much, it’s probably my most fulfilling job though it didn’t pay as well as modelling

Tell us a little about your work in Savills. How would you describe a typical day?

Other than tons of emails and calls a day, I spend a lot of time meeting clients in retail, F&B and nightspot businesses, as well as landlords of retail malls and developments.

My team and I are currently working on orchardgateway, a new iconic shopping mall in Orchard Road under construction. We also represent many overseas retailers looking to expand in Singapore. I also spend a lot of time on site visits at malls, interesting lifestyle locations and construction sites. On some nights a week I attend cocktail events or client dinners.

What’s currently in the works for you?

Our business is becoming more regional, and we are increasingly spending more time with our regional offices, especially our Hong Kong office, working on projects together, in Singapore and overseas. My team is also busy searching for great locations for new tenants in retail, F&B and entertainment

Any plans for the future?

Recently I became a shareholder in a new ultra-lounge which opens in March. It’s a partnership with the owner of That CD Shop, Herry Lee, and a well-known DJ and club entertainment director Vinnie Quek. It’s called The Mansion. I’ll be DJing there once a month and will also record CDs when time permits I spend 2 to 3 nights a week on this project and it allows me to indulge in my passion for music.

With both a successful career as lifestyle and retail senior director at property consultant, Savills, and as a mother of two, it’s never easy juggling the two. How do you balance your time between your career and family?

I had always struggled to juggle my time as a mother and career woman. Thankfully, I had my 19 year old daughter and 18 year old son when I was young. My daughter is studying medicine in Cambridge and my son recently completed his IB Diploma and did well enough to attend a prestigious university. Now that the major part of my parenting job is done, I have more time to see my friends and work on my new ‘baby’ which is The Mansion.

It seems you’re always having things to do and places to go. What is your favourite thing to do to relax and de-stress after a tiring day?

I can never sit still for more than 2 minutes and I have trouble winding down my mind before I sleep. You won’t see me at a salon or spa very much because being on the go and keeping busy is being in my comfort zone. Maybe one day, when I finally grow up, I will appreciate just doing nothing or take up fishing.
